DECALS Is the Starting Point for Sporting Licenses

New York fishing, hunting, and trapping licenses run through DEC's licensing system and season rules.

If you are new to New York fishing, hunting, or trapping, start with DEC rather than a random sporting-goods checklist. DECALS is the state’s automated licensing system for sporting licenses and related purchases. DEC also maintains specific fishing-license guidance, including ways to buy a license and who generally needs one.

The license purchase is not the whole rulebook. Activity, age, residency, season, waterbody, species, tags, stamps, access rules, and special permits can all change what a person needs for a particular trip.

Before you head out, check DEC’s current season and regulation pages, then keep the license or registry proof available. For saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing, hunting, trapping, and youth or senior situations, the right answer starts at DEC and then narrows to the actual day, place, and activity.

A Catskill trout stream, an Adirondack hunting camp, a Finger Lakes boat launch, and a Long Island saltwater trip can all send people to different rule details after the license is bought.

DECALS is the purchase doorway. The actual outing still needs the right season, place, method, and species sorted out.
