Staten Island small-building owners should make composting a routine building task, not a last-minute bag at the curb. Curbside composting is available citywide and picked up weekly on recycling day. These materials should go in a labeled bin with a secure lid or a DSNY brown bin. Bins must be 55 gallons or less.
Separation is mandatory, property owners may receive fines when compostable material is mixed with trash, and buildings with four or more units must provide a designated storage area with clearly labeled compost bins.
Check the recycling-day schedule and bin labels before setout. Use a secure, labeled bin of 55 gallons or less. For a building with four or more units, keep the designated storage area and clearly labeled compost bins in place for residents.
