Rensselaer REAL ID Trips Have a County-Resident Rule
Rensselaer DMV customers should separate REAL ID or Enhanced license timing from ordinary motor-vehicle errands before visiting Troy or East Greenbush.

A Rensselaer County DMV trip has one detail worth catching before the car is already parked. Since April 8, 2025, REAL ID and Enhanced license applications at the Troy and East Greenbush offices are limited to Rensselaer County residents. Other motor-vehicle transactions can still be handled by customers from elsewhere.
That split matters for a household doing several errands at once. A plate surrender, title form, registration, or ordinary license question may fit the county office route, while a REAL ID or Enhanced license trip needs the county-residency check. REAL ID and Enhanced license transactions are not handled after 3:00 p.m.
The office map is simple enough: Troy and East Greenbush are the full-service offices, both with weekday hours listed as 8:30 to 4:00. The Hoosick Falls satellite office is listed, but operations there are suspended. The 3:00 p.m. cutoff is the part to write on the calendar if the errand is a REAL ID or Enhanced license. Before a bigger license errand, build the folder around the person, county of residence, proof documents, office, and time of day. That is the difference between a DMV morning and a DMV do-over.
