Pharsalia Woods Turns Round Pond Into a Birding Balcony

DEC's Pharsalia Woods page ties the Round Pond viewing platform, sandhill cranes, the Finger Lakes Trail, and CCC truck-road access together.

Pharsalia Woods State Forest gives Chenango County one of its clearer public-land stories. The forest sits in Plymouth and Pharsalia, and the Civilian Conservation Corps Nine Mile Truck Trail crosses a forested plateau.

That old access route makes the woods feel like more than back-road acreage. Hiking, primitive camping, hunting, trapping, snowmobiling, and six miles of Finger Lakes Trail make it a working public forest with several different seasons of use.

Round Pond is where the place becomes especially memorable. An accessible boardwalk leads to an elevated, covered viewing platform over a 90-acre wetland complex. Rare plants and wetland birds are part of that wetland, including sandhill cranes, which are uncommon visitors in New York. The platform gives people a clear reason to slow down and look across the wetland instead of treating the forest as a pass-through.

That combination gives Pharsalia and Plymouth a public-land memory with shape. CCC access work, trail miles, and a wetland overlook tie the practical route to unusual bird habitat. The road name, the trail miles, and the birds all help the forest stand out. It is public land with a plateau backbone and a wetland balcony.
