Check an NYC Home-Improvement Contractor License

NYC home-improvement contractors over the small-job threshold need a DCWP license that consumers can look up.

NYC311 says a contractor needs a Department of Consumer and Worker Protection license to do home-improvement work costing more than $200. DCWP points consumers to its online Search Business tool. That search can show whether a person or business has a DCWP license, and it does not require an account.

DCWP also posts a list of unlicensed home-improvement contractors. Search the business name, ask for the license number, and compare both with the contract.

Keep a dated copy of the license result, contract, estimates, and payment records together. If the business name or license number does not match, ask DCWP before paying or letting work begin.
