Surrender New York Plates Before Ending Liability Insurance
If a New York-registered vehicle will not keep New York liability coverage, handle plates before creating an insurance lapse.

Do not cancel New York liability insurance while the New York plates are still active.
DMV’s simple rule is: no insurance, no plates. If a vehicle does not have valid auto liability coverage, DMV says the registration and plates must be surrendered immediately. For people moving out of state, DMV says to surrender the New York registration and plates before New York insurance is canceled.
Replacing New York coverage with out-of-state insurance early can create a lapse, and DMV says it may suspend the registration and possibly the driver license even after a move. The clean order is to register and insure the vehicle where it belongs, then surrender the New York plates as DMV instructs before ending the New York policy.
Treat this as a sorting note. DMV may need one office for DMV and another for Plates, depending on the address or record. The goal is to ask the right local question early. That can spare a second trip, a late fee, or a form sent to the wrong desk. DMV Plates is the practical clue to keep.
