Ithaca Renovations Need the Building Permit Portal Early

Ithaca owners should check the city Building Division before treating electrical, demolition, tent, sign, or compliance work as informal.

Published June 24, 2026 · Last verified June 24, 2026

Start an Ithaca home or small-building project with the Building Division before buying materials. The city accepts online applications for building, electrical, demolition, tent, and sign work, along with certificates of compliance.

Read the city’s permit page, choose the application that fits the job, and gather the plans and other papers named there before starting work that may need city review or an inspection.

Keep the property address, form or permit number, online receipt, notice, and inspection step in one job file. If the Building Division sends the project to another city office, add that office and its answer to the same file.
