Chemung Tax Search Can Show Delinquent County-Town Taxes, But Payment Still Goes to Treasurer

Chemung County says delinquent county-town taxes are viewable online, while delinquent payments must be made directly to the Treasurer’s Office.

Chemung separates two chores that people often mash together: looking up a delinquent county or town tax bill and actually paying it. Delinquent county and town taxes are available for online viewing, with public login information for the tax-search system. A receipt for taxes paid or a balance owing can be requested through the Property Tax Search form, which is helpful when a closing, refinance, estate file, or old bill question needs a number.

Payment is a different lane. Delinquent tax payments cannot be made through the online search system. They go directly to the Chemung County Treasurer’s Office by mail, in person at 320 E. Market Street in Elmira, or by credit card through the county payment request, with card fees applying.

Have the property address, tax-map or parcel number, town, bill year, owner name, and the reason you need the receipt or balance. Current school, city, or village bills may still belong somewhere else. The search screen is a good starting point, not a magic pay button. It gives you a number to discuss, not permission to send money anywhere or assume the bill is finished by itself.
