Chautauqua County’s Historian page is a good place to start when a question is old, local, and hard to name. The county archive is in the Mayville courthouse complex. Its early legal and court records date from 1811. The page also links to town and village historians.
The archive can help with old hamlet names and family-history clues. It can also help with school or church references, historic markers, and stories that do not fit neatly into taxes or permits.
Before calling, write down the name, place, rough date range, municipality, and record type. A historian can help frame the question before you know which office or collection may hold the answer.
